Review The Reflection

Oh my goodness, "The Reflection" completely captivated me! From the very first page, I was hooked by Mora's unsettling experiences. The premise – a seemingly perfect life masking a terrifying supernatural struggle – is brilliantly intriguing, and the way Franklin Christopher builds the suspense is masterful. I found myself constantly questioning Mora's sanity, while simultaneously wondering if her parents were losing theirs. The uncertainty is truly what makes the book so compelling. It's a fantastic blend of psychological thriller and supernatural horror, striking a perfect balance between the internal turmoil Mora experiences and the external threats she faces.

What I especially appreciated was the author's exploration of Mora's internal world. She's not just a character dealing with spooky things; she's a relatable teenager grappling with self-doubt, the pressures of school, and complicated family dynamics. This added layer of realism made her incredibly sympathetic, even when her actions were questionable. The author cleverly uses Mora's teenage anxieties to fuel the narrative ambiguity, blurring the lines between what's real and what's imagined, adding a chilling layer of uncertainty to the already unsettling events.

The pacing is excellent. While some reviewers mentioned a slightly slow burn at the beginning, I found it effectively established the atmosphere and Mora's baseline reality before the unsettling events fully escalated. The descriptions of the supernatural elements are chillingly effective, creating a palpable sense of dread and unease. While the descriptions are evocative, some reviewers noted grammatical errors and repetitive word choices. This is a valid criticism, and hopefully, future editions will address these minor editing concerns. However, these issues didn't significantly detract from my overall enjoyment.

The cliffhanger ending, though frustrating in its abruptness, was brilliantly executed. It left me desperate to know what happens next, and immediately eager to start the sequel. The entire book has a deliciously creepy atmosphere, reminiscent of other great supernatural thrillers like "Coraline" or "Behind Her Eyes," although it certainly has its own unique voice and style.

While some readers felt the book could have benefited from a longer length to explore the family dynamic and character history more deeply, I believe the concise nature actually heightened the tension and kept the narrative focused. The book is a quick, engaging read that perfectly serves its purpose: to leave the reader utterly unsettled and craving more. The relatable character of Mora, coupled with the terrifying supernatural elements, makes this a book I'd easily recommend to young adult readers and adults alike. It's a thrilling and genuinely spooky read that manages to be both thought-provoking and utterly terrifying, and the lingering questions make it almost impossible to put down. I can't wait for the next installment!
